Visible parts can either be painted or provided with a functional and decorative metallization. Different grains and structures can be incorporated into the silicone mold and achieve attractive effects.
In a clean room spray booth both solvent and water-based paints and gels can be processed. It produces high-gloss surfaces after appropriate treatment as well as matte surfaces. The curing is done in temperature-controlled curing ovens.
In a VPD (Vapor Phase Deposition) system metals are applied by means of thermal evaporation from the gaseous state onto the substrate. The vapour deposition can be considered for headlamps and taillights, as well as bezels and decorative parts. Mainly aluminum is evaporated, but also chromium, copper and gold are possible. The metallized components can be protected with a hard coat layer or by a thin SiO2 coating by plasma polymerization.
In order to produce grains or structures on surfaces of prototypes a special structure is applied to the master pattern and inserted into the silicone mold. Thus, it is already possible in the prototype stage to achieve a surface structure corresponding to to the later series . In general, these structures are metallized afterwards.
